Our house in Mecina Bombaron

Self-catering holiday accommodation in the Alpujarra

Our house in Mecina Bombaron is a old-fashioned three bedroom village house in the old part of Mecina Bombaron, a village in Alpujarra de la Sierra, about 1½ hours drive from the provincial town of Granada. The village is high - about 1200m above sea level, and the people here make a living by farming on the sierra above the village or from herding sheep, goats or cattle.

The house is built on a slope, opposite one of the old village wash-houses (or lavadero) in the Barrio Alto (upper section), which is the oldest section of this village, dating back to Moorish times.

The house has two double bedrooms and a twin bedroom. There is also a cot, a bed-settee in the main lounge, and another fold-up single bed, so nine people could be accommodated if necessary - though we don't advise this normally.

There is a spacious dining room and a small but well-equipped kitchen on the ground floor. There is also a 'utility' room with a washing machine and iron and ironing board.

In the basement there is a large woodstore and a bathroom. There is another bathroom on the first floor.

There is access to the roof, where there is a small roof terrace which is a very pleasant place to sit out or to eat when the weather is hot. From the terrace there are views up to the mountains and to the Mediterranean.

The Mediterranean is about 1 hour's drive away, and a day at the seaside is easily achievable from here. However the main attraction of the area (for us anyway) is the fine walking and cycling to be had in the Sierra Nevada, on the flanks of which the village is situated.

A long-distance footpath, the GR7, goes right past the door, and there are several other waymarked routes from the village. From nearby villages (such as Trevelez, which is 30 minutes drive away) you can walk right to the tops of 3000m peaks including Mulhacen - the highest peak on the mainland of Spain.

There is also a network of high-level tracks around the sierra and these are ideal for mountain biking. The routes are tough and high but excellent excursions.
